If you have to choose, go buy Hades or Dead Cells first, they're much more apt options for this particular genre. The Steam Awards are here! You can nominate Curse of the Dead Gods in any category but we would really recommend voting for us in the "Best Game You Suck At" category to maximize our chance to win, even though we all know you guys rock at Curse of the Dead Gods □ The controls are not as responsive as they should and a lot of the cues (when an enemy attacks or when a trap activates) are so poorly communicated that it only makes it even more difficult to play flawlessly.Įverything else, from the aesthetics to the curse system or the upgrades range from fine to excellent, but the combat itself (the core of the game) could be a lot better. Roguelikes depend almost entirely on their gameplay and this game's is. I've only played a little bit so far, but it's already a bit of a tough choice. It's a shame because the game is gorgeous in every way, but I honestly don't recommend it over any other roguelike. I fought K'ax taca and tanked nearly 1400 damage because I accumulated 2100HP easily and could just ignore his attacks and hit him straight until he fell. This is true even with bosses: they're sort of imaginative for the first 2 minutes, but then you realise they're just sponges with simple patterns. The only thing you have to watch out for are traps. There's been times where I've cleared an entire room without dodging because enemies die in a few strikes and it's more effective to just rush them and attack while fully taking any hits because they barely sting. Your character is nimble and the tells are very clear so that you're forced to plan tactics to separate enemies and pick them off one by one as best as you can.Ĭurse of the Dead Gods ignores this principle and instead makes you an unstoppable force of nature. I'm used to having to dodge/parry perfectly in these games to avoid enemy attacks because every hit is extremely punishing and draws you closer to an untimely end. Why else would they make you an absolute TANK? I've played just a bit more and what I state below remains the same, but with a caveat.Īfter doing four full runs, I now firmly believe the devs are fully aware the game isn't as sharp in its handling as other roguelikes and have simply chose to let it be that way.
